In May 2013, Irish soldiers branded deserters for fighting alongside Britain in WWII were finally pardoned. Many in Ireland believed the soldiers were needed at home, where troops are seen surveying a creamery in Wexford (above) after it was bombed by Nazi warplanes in a violation of the country’s neutrality. Irish soldiers who fought with the Allies were blacklisted at home, barred from state jobs, refused military pensions, and barred from employment by pro-Republicans. Justice Minister Alan Shatter last year announced legislation to grant amnesty to the former troops formerly accused of betraying their country.

Continuing my research into WWII, I found this fabulous photo of female pilots in the Kalamazoo Gazette. From the left: Dorothy Dodd Eppstein, Hellen Skjersaa Hansen, Doris Burmester Nathan and Elizabeth Chadwick Dressler. The ladies walk in front of a B-25 plane. They were Air Force engineering test pilots for the B-25 during World War II.
Unsung heroes…

So, I’m working away on that WWII-circus script when I stumble upon this delightful research find of the day. An elephant and a clown assist the war effort in 1942 by collecting scrap metal and hauling away old cars for ammunitions.
